Live Review: The Red Hot Chili Peppers (Live at Knebworth House, England, 23.06.2012)

Knebworth House, a venue that has been used by many greats including Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, has played host to another world-class band – The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Chili Peppers came on to an eager crowd, opening with ‘Monarchy of Roses’ after fans had waited for numerous hours. It’s clear that the band know how to keep the momentum of their shows as this was followed by the gut-rumbling bass notes of ‘Around the World’.

Fans going crazier than they had all day were then treated to the likes of ‘Dani Califonia’ and ‘Can’t Stop’. With the Chili Peppers having a huge number of hits under their belts, the show just kept getting better and better.

The crowds were even treated to a song from ‘One Hot Minute’ when Flea played the classic track ‘Pea’. Whilst this caused confusion for a number of people, it really brought out all of the die-hard fans and was an uplifting song even for those who hadn’t heard it before.

The lighting throughout the concert was very entertaining.

Strangely enough as ‘The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie’ was played the over-cast clouds drizzled slightly before subsiding. A song that the typical English weather enhanced.

The rain still holding off for the most part, anthems including ‘Under the Bridge’ and ‘Californication’ were sung in unison by the 80,000 strong crowd. This was a beautiful experience that was quite frankly overwhelming, as everyone was part of this one experience together.

As the band closed with a phenomenal rendition of ‘By The Way’ the calls for an encore erupted from the crowd. The Red Hot Chili Peppers had something special lined-up for the encore, an arrangement of songs that would let them finish the concert with a bang.

The encore started off with a jam, followed by the hugely successful track ‘Sir Psycho Sexy’ from the ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ album. Not only did they play this for the fans of their older content, but the band also saved the heavier tracks ‘Suck My Kiss’ and ‘Give It  Away’ to make sure the crowd gave it their all right until the end.

Once again, the Red Hot Chili Peppers proved that they’ve still got it, pleasing fans from every era of their career. With a hugely impressive visual display throughout the event, and a surprisingly high standard of audio quality, this was a night to remember.
